Food Safety During an Outage

A closed refrigerator can keep food cold for up to 24 hours, and a closed freezer can keep food frozen for up to 48 hours. So keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep food from spoiling for as long as possible. Use dry ice to cool foods in your refrigerator and freezer during long outages – just remember to use gloves when handling, and never touch the dry ice directly.

Central Hudson filed revisions to its electric and gas rate schedules on July 22, 2022, to implement provisions for credits and reimbursements paid to customers affected by widespread, prolonged service outages lasting at least 72 hours and affecting at least 20,000 electric or 1,500 natural gas customers. Residential customers with service interruptions exceeding 72 hours will receive a $25 credit for each subsequent 24-hour period until service is restored. Additionally, residential and small commercial customers can apply for reimbursement of spoiled food and medicine with qualifying proof of loss.
