Dig Safely
Planning to dig or excavate? Protect yourself and your community — call 811 first!

Before breaking ground on any project, make a quick and easy call to UDig NY by dialing 811 at least two—but no more than 10—days before you dig. The service is free, and it’s required by New York state law.
Calling 811 isn’t just for professional excavators. Homeowners and DIYers should call, too—whether you’re planting trees, installing a mailbox or fence, building a swing set, or refreshing your garden.
When you call 811, UDig NY notifies local utilities and municipalities, including electric, gas, water, phone, and cable providers, so underground utility lines can be clearly marked before work begins. This helps prevent injuries, service outages, and costly repairs, keeping you, your family, and your neighborhood safe.
Skipping this step can put people and property at risk. A quick call before you dig helps ensure your project goes smoothly from start to finish.
