The 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web marks a milestone in the technology used to connect people around the world today, and Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. recognizes the way the Internet has transformed everyday life. “While the Internet has allowed for significant advances in how we communicate, share knowledge and conduct business, there are precautions that should be taken to protect personal data and avoid unscrupulous practices,” said Charles A. Freni, President and C.E.O. of Central Hudson.
“Society has become increasingly reliant on this global platform,” said Freni. “Unfortunately, there are those who take advantage of this technology to steal information and money from unwary victims, so it is important that our customers remain vigilant to protect themselves from scammers.”
Most recently, a scam from an email address mimicking the accounting department from Central Hudson Savings Central was reported regarding fictitious outstanding payments due. “Central Hudson does not use email to obtain payments or personal information, and customers should be wary of anyone attempting to secure this information or request payments in this way,” said Freni. “Do not click on any links nor reply to these emails," he said.
Other scams reported by Central Hudson customers include attempts to collect payments on fictitious past due balance to avoid disconnection of utility services by directing victims to use a prepaid card purchased at a pharmacy or convenience store. Central Hudson would not require use of a prepaid card for payment.
In some cases, the caller identification (or 'Caller ID') number appearing on the victim's telephone appears to be from Central Hudson, and the caller also provides a telephone number for a return call which when reached utilizes a re-recording of Central Hudson's upfront message.
“If ever concerned about a call, email or in-person visit, our customers should call Central Hudson at (845) 452-2700 or 1-800-527-2714 and ask for verification," said Freni. “Customers may also wish to report the incident to local law enforcement.”
