Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation celebrates engineers and recognizes their many contributions during national Engineers Week, held each February. The National Society of Professional Engineers first launched Engineering Week in 1951 to show how engineers make a difference in the world, increase public dialogue about the need for engineers and bring engineering to life for students, educators, and parents.

Central Hudson supported Engineers Week by sponsoring and attending the local E-Week program presented by Mid-Hudson Technical Societies, this year held in New Windsor on February 26. More than 20 Central Hudson employees attended to learn about accomplishments in engineering, network with fellow engineers and provide encouragement to students and future engineers.

“The devices, systems and infrastructure we rely upon every day are developed and designed by engineers,” said Paul E. Haering, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Operations at Central Hudson. “As the engineering profession have evolved, their contributions have grown, and the opportunities for careers in engineering have increased, as well.”

Central Hudson’s engineers are leading the transition in the energy delivery systems of tomorrow. "Our engineers design the electric and gas delivery systems that serve our region, and work with our field crews and other employees to construct and implement critical infrastructure projects on behalf of our customers," said Haering. “Today, our engineers are working to modernize the local energy grid by improving efficiency and resilience of the energy delivery systems, integrating new technologies and enabling greater adoption of solar and other distribute renewable resources of energy. They are a part of a larger team of Central Hudson employees, implementing improvements to the way we serve our customers," he said.

"We encourage students to consider engineering as a worthwhile and fulfilling career," added Haering. To provide guidance to students interested in a career in engineering, Central Hudson employees serve as mentors to Poughkeepsie High School students participating in the E-TECH academy (Engineering, Technology, Early College High School). The initiative is a partnership between the Central Hudson, the Poughkeepsie City School District and Dutchess Community College, and provides participating students with an integrated sequence of high school and college course work, mentorship by engineering professionals, workplace experience and potential internships, culminating in both a high school diploma and a college associate degree in the field of engineering.

Central Hudson also offers an internship program for college students, with opportunities in engineering as well as other fields. "Our program offers interns real-world assignments with the opportunity to make meaningful contributions, and many find careers with Central Hudson," said Haering.
