To enhance the reliability and efficiency of the natural gas distribution system, Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation is replacing pipelines nearing the end of their useful life in the Arlington area of the Town of Poughkeepsie. This project is part of a larger initiative to accelerate the replacement of aging gas lines and services throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley.

“While gas main replacements have been taking place for many years, an accelerated program was launched in 2016 under an agreement with state regulators,” said Paul E. Haering, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Operations. “Since then, approximately 60 miles of gas pipes nearing the end of their useful life have been replaced under this initiative, five times the previous rate.”

The original lines were largely installed in the 1930s or earlier when gas service was first introduced, comprised of cast iron and unprotected steel. Approximately 11,500 feet of gas lines will be replaced in the Arlington area over a 6-month period with new pipes chiefly made of polyethylene, which is a highly durable material and less susceptible to environmental conditions. Service lines to individual businesses will also be replaced, coordinated with property owners.

Central Hudson is working with construction partner, Posillico, Inc., to install the new natural gas distribution mains and services. Replacement activities will take place from the spring through late summer along the following streets:

• Fulton Ave., between S. Grand Ave. and Raymond Ave.
• Fulton Ct.
• Raymond Ave., between Fulton Ave. and Main St.
• Main St., between N. Grand Ave. and Dutchess Tpke.
• Grubb St., east of S. Grand Ave.
• Streit Ave.
• Lewis Ave.
• Van Wagner Rd., between Raymond Ave. Ext .and Main St.
• Fowler Ave.
• Haight Ave., between Raymond Ave. and Fairmont Ave.
• Davis Ave.
• Lagrange Ave.
• Collegeview Ave.

Haering explained that at times, temporary lane closures may be in effect, and parking may be restricted in the active work zones. “We are working with municipal, county and state officials in coordinating this project, and have consulted with the business and college communities in scheduling the work to avoid interfering with the many planned events taking place in the area,” he said.

Road restoration work will be performed as the project takes place, and final paving will be completed in the fall. “In the end, the gas system serving this area will be updated with new, modern materials.”
